WHO IS MATTHEW QUEK?
Matthew Quek (郭光正) is a trained teacher with a Masters in Educational Research Methods.
He has accumulated more than ten years’ experience in teaching History and Humanities to students while preparing them for N, O, and A Levels, as well as the International Baccalaureate diploma. He has taught in various schools such as St. Joseph Institution (Independent), Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), Hwa Chong Institution (College Section) and Zhong Hua Secondary School.
He then proceeded to pursue singing, passing Grade 8 (ABRSM) in Voice with distinction and receiving his Associate Diploma (ATCL) in Voice from Trinity College (London, England).
In 2004, Matthew won the top title in the MOE X Factor Elite challenge talent competition. Matthew’s original composition was one of the three compositions selected for the finals in the Rhapsody 2002 competition’s song-writing category.
In July 2005, ‘Matt Q’ was invited to sing a Solo Item from “The Phantom of the Opera” during a farewell ceremony for Dr Ng Eng Hen and has sung for President Nathan at the Istana in January 2011, and his government dignitaries.
Matthew has also been personally trained by Mr Dean Kaelin, the internationally acclaimed vocal coach who taught David Archuleta of “American Idol” fame. Mr Dean Kaelin, the President of the International Voice Teachers of Mix (IVTOM), has personally certified Matthew as Singapore’s main representative in relation to vocal coaching and pedagogy.
And, today Matthew is an accomplished writing and oral speaking coach, as well as an internationally acclaimed singer-composer.

Mr. Matthew Quek, an inspiring history teacher has been instrumental in ensuring the success of his students for achieving great results. During my “A” Levels examination preparation, he was always there for me when I needed his sound advice while planning for the revision, having been there and done it, and would patiently listen to my queries and provide me with sound solutions.
Mr. Quek taught me history in Secondary 3 for about half a year in Zhonghua Secondary School. Despite this short duration, he is one of the few teachers that I am truly faithful to. His depth of knowledge in history and interesting history lessons has spurred my interest in this subject. As a result, I scored an A1 for my combined humanities during O levels.
Mr Matthew Quek was my history teacher in Zhonghua Secondary School in 2004. Mr Quek had the ability to break down big ideas into small bites to let his students understand the lesson well, and he would patiently guide students who had difficulty coping. He gave plenty of examples and chances for the class to practice on so as to get the hang of writing the history essays.
Mr Quek was a very lively teacher with a sense of humour. He always tried to inject laughter in the class with his in-class activities. He made the subject less dry and succeeded in engaging everyone’s interest in the lessons.
He was very approachable to questions and dedicated to help his students to excel. I remember on many occasions, Mr Quek stayed back after school to meet a group of us, painstakingly evaluating our draft essays, helping us to refine my skills in writing argumentative history essays and also to clear all doubts from lessons. Back in the secondary school days, humanities subjects were unappealing and difficult to do well in. However, I ultimately scored well for the O levels paper, largely to be credited to the foundations set by Mr Quek. I learnt from him the acronym “SEE” of writing essay – Statement, Evidence and Explanation. This acronym was stuck with me all these years and even today, as a student in university, my essays are written with this technique in mind.
All in all, Mr Quek is a teacher who will put in much effort in his teachings, and his students will undoubtedly benefit from the knowledge they will gain from him.
Mr Matthew Quek taught me International History during JC. He was also my form teacher. Apart from bringing with him a solid grounding in history and also years of experience, he is a very responsible teacher who ensures that all queries and doubts are clarified before students leave the class. He is meticulous by nature and will not take the easy way out, choosing instead to go through every point.
Also, Mr Quek takes the effort to connect with his students, hence building up a rapport with them through the sharing of personal interests and opinions. It is my belief that he will make a good teacher be it in a school or tuition centre environment.

Mr Quek also graciously offers constructive and encouraging comments in his feedback on assignments, which have always been promptly returned. He clearly takes pride in his work, given that he always appears energetic and engaged when teaching.
