Hear from his students

Keith Leung

I am currently a student at the University of Oxford studying Economics and Management, and am writing this testimonial for Mr Matthew Quek, who was my history tutor and civics tutor at Hwa Chong Institution from 2007 to 2008. He was a very inspiring teacher who was extremely passionate about his subject, encouraging students to continue to do better by providing detailed and clear feedback after every test or exam.  He was also willing to spend time outside class to help his students to understand the subject better.

Mr. Matthew Quek has the ability to teach history in a unique manner, which allows students to understand the concepts better. His notes and sample exam answers were very clear and hence very useful for students before exams. The content was clear and easy to understand for most students.

Mr. Quek taught the International History content in an engaging and relevant way. During his lectures, I was able to get a good grasp of each topic as he made the information easy to digest, clearly signposting what happened, who was involved and its effects. I also found it useful that he pointed out what was important and explained how to use the information in our arguments. The essay structure he taught in J1 provided the basis for me to develop my argument in J2, and I learnt a good framework for organising my own notes. For instance the basic perspective-action-impact approach was very useful in helping me to form a coherent understanding of each topic. Mr. Quek was able to engage us by asking questions, involving us in the lesson with group presentations, and having a clear structure and direction to each lesson. He was patient in his explanations, and would always respond quickly to e-mails. I appreciated the comments he gave on my essays and the many resources he provided us, including essays from other students and seniors, as they provided extra details and pointers that we did not have time for in class. He was dedicated as a teacher and effective at conveying the content and teaching the skills for History.

I just completed my A levels at HCI and am applying to study literature/education studies and literature in the UK.

Mr. Matthew Quek is one of the best teachers I have ever been taught by. He is very motivated to deliver lessons in the best possible way for students to grasp concepts. History classes come to life with his innovative teaching…Content becomes easily digestible for even weaker students like me. With acronyms like SEE which stands for Statement, Evidence, and Explanation, skills necessary for the subject become manageable to learn and apply. Content is also broken down into bite-size parts with the comprehensive summaries and mindmaps that Mr. Quek comes up with…

The patient teacher always makes himself available for clarifications and motivates students with encouragement. It comes as no surprise that students’ grades improved remarkably under his guidance.

Apart from teaching me International History during JC, Mr Quek was my civics tutor who performed responsibilities beyond what was expected and required of him. He was conscientious in preparing ahead for every class, bringing with him the knowledge that he was always ready to share. He addressed all questions patiently and comprehensively, which encouraged students to stretch their minds and raise any questions they had. In this way, I left every class knowing more than before and more than what books and notes could offer. His effectiveness has been proven through his students’ results during the A Levels… I genuinely believe that Mr Quek is an outstanding teacher who will be an asset to any institution or centre he becomes a part of.
